Resurfacing or Repaving your Driveway

Resurfacing vs repaving: which is right for your driveway?

Even with regular maintenance and repair, the constant exposure to UV rays, sun, salt, snow and extreme weather conditions can cause your driveway to become cracked and damaged.

Eventually, you’ll be faced with two options: resurface or repave. But what’s the difference? And which option is right for you? Keep reading to learn more.

Resurfacing
Resurfacing involves simply repaving the surface of your driveway over top of the existing driveway. It’s less involved than a complete repaving and can be completed in less time and for less money. All visible cracks will be sealed, and then a new layer of asphalt will be applied over your existing driveway.

Resurfacing an asphalt driveway may be a good option for you if you’re looking for an inexpensive way to quickly increase your home’s curb appeal. A driveway resurface can cover up any cracks that have formed and leave you with a smooth, professional looking driveway.

Pros:
• Less expensive
• Quicker
• Boosts home’s curb appeal

Cons:
• Won’t correct underlying issues
• Not as durable as complete repaving

Repaving
Repaving asphalt or concrete involves removing the existing driveway and creating a new one. Repaving professionals will use heavy equipment to dig up the existing asphalt or concrete and haul it away to be recycled. They’ll then have to smooth the soil underneath to make sure that it is level and apply a layer of gravel to ascertain proper drainage. Afterwards, they’ll add several layers of asphalt or concrete to create your new driveway.

Repaving is the best option if your existing driveway is severely damaged, contains holes or pits, or is not level. Your driveway should be installed to slope away from your house to ensure proper drainage. Repaving your driveway comes with higher upfront costs than a simple resurfacing, but will produce longer-lasting results.

Pros:
• Can correct issues with driveway foundation and drainage
• Longest-lasting results
• Boosts home’s curb appeal

Cons:
• Higher up-front costs
• More complex
• Takes longer
